Is my GD clouding my good judgement for baby's name!?

We are due with baby #4 in March.  I have been thinking of names a lot lately.  Keeps my mind off the GD.   So I posted a poll on baby center with my top choices.  My favorite name for a boy is Francis.  I know I know.....it's a girls name, or at least people initially think of it as a girls name.  My youngest son is Linus, and I love the fact that it is such a "sweet" name.  I am looking for something old fashioned, but not common...Francis seemed a great fit.  But, all the feedback I have received thus far has been very negative.

Could the fact that I desperately want a daughter be influencing my choice in a boy's name?  Should I not listen to all the criticisms and just go with Francis anyway.  I love the name (actually I love it for a boy, but not for a girl...isn't that odd).

Well my daughter ended up with a boys name so I cant say anything.  Im sure if I hadnt wanted a boy so badly (I actually picked out the name before we knew the gender as I was just so determined it would be a boy). I was telling someone on here than I like the names Hayden and Ryan for girls but not for boys.  Im just funky like that though but you should go with which ever name you want.  When I found DD's name, I "just knew", it was like love at first sight for a name, lol.  For this baby, on the other hand, Im having a terrible time and have let people talk me out of names I really like- that tells me I must not have my heart set on them too much though.  With DD, no one could change my mind!  I think I may try waiting until birth to pick from a handful of names I've chosen.... some people say that works better

Here in England, Francis is DEFINATELY a boys name. I have never known it used for a girl.  I say go for it!

Francis is totally a boy's name.  If it's a girl, you spell it Frances.  I like it better for a boy!  And Linus is super sweet!

Just my opinion, and no offense, but, it sounds like your GD is getting in the way. To me, there is old-fashioned, and then there is just...bad. I really dislike Francis; he'll be called Fran for short, and that sounds feminine and just...not good. I think with names, parents should consider the child; you're giving him a gift, the first he'll ever receive, and you don't want him to hate this gift for the rest of your and his life.

My friend LEGALLY changed his name when he was 21 he hated it so much. It was Elliott. I know you can't predict what he'll like or not in life, but the majority is something to listen to b/c you DON'T want your son resenting it.  If you like old-fashioned names, how about Samuel, Luke, Michael, Paul, Andrew, John, Adam, Joseph, Nicholas or Robert? There are TON to pick from that he most likely in the end like and be proud of.

No way!  The traditional nn for Francis is Frank!  I really like Francis.  It was the name of the oldest bro on Malcolm in the Middle.

I don't mind the name Francis at all.  I only see it as a boys name not really a girl.  As PP said Frances is a girls name which is rarely if ever used.  I have an Uncle Francis, my DH middle name is Francis(which he doesn't care for at all), and DH had a boss that was Francis with the nickname Fran.  Francis could be short for Francisco which is all boy name.  Are you opposed to him having the nickname Franc/Frank/Fran because that will probably happen with the name Francis.

I have some other softer sweet sounding boys names suggestions if you want them:

Curtis, Keith, Miles, Douglas, Cyrus, Harris, Ross, Russell, Seth, Heath

Good Luck!!

Francis is good for a little boy. Don't see anything wrong with it, although it's not very common. I really like your youngest DS's name...Linus. Reminds me of the 'Peanuts' clan, whom I adore Stick out tongue. If you get a girl, are you going to name her Lucy? Lol..j/k.

I don't care for Francis at all.  I've only known one and his nickname was Frannie, which makes for a very wimpy/weak sounding boy name.  Sorry!

What about Morgan or Henry or Oliver or Milo?

I like it.  But, I prefer softer sounding names for boys as well.  I knew one Francis, and he went by Frank most of the time.  I think it's the best of both worlds ~ Francis for when he's younger...and if he wants something more masculine Frank totally works.  I think if you love it, you should use it.  Happy  At least he won't be one of those kids who has to use their last initial just because his name is so popular.

One of my students is named Francis and he is called "Frankie."  He's a great kid too -- totally funny and well adjusted!

Francis is definitely a boy name. Frances is a girls name. Francis was my Dad's middle name and a good friend dated a guy named Francis a few years ago (just to prove the name could belong to a 30-something and not just a 50-something! Stick out tongue ) He always went by Francis to us - no nicknames.
