This baby's middle name will likely be Grace . . . but I'm considering giving her two middle names (Grace Elizabeth).  Who has used three names?  I'm wondering if it's weird or unnecessary (what could you possibly use all those names for?).  My boys only have two names, which might add to the weirdness.

I know quite a few people with three names.  My Latino friends tend to have two middle names -- maybe it's a cultural thing?

I don't think it's weird.  If you like how it sounds, or you have two names you'd like for sentimental or family reasons, go with it!  And even if it is weird, what's the impact to a little weirdness?

Oh, and Grace Elizabeth is really pretty -- classic but feminine.

My boys both have two middle names, with my maiden name as the second one. When we got married I changed my last name but kept my maiden name as a second middle name. My husband also legally changed his name to take my maiden name as his second middle name. So all of our kids will have that too. The only time it's weird is on forms that need a middle initial but only allow one. We end up just using the first middle name on those. My signature includes both middle initials, but my credit card only has room on it for one. I also know quite a few people who have given their kids two middle names (like Grace Elizabeth). My grandmother even had two middle names! I don't really know what you'd use all those names for, or how often you would use them, but if you have that many names you want to use, I say use them!

We have a long last name so we wanted unique short names for our kids....but we also wanted to have meaningful middle names so we did 2 middle names for both of ours kids.....personally I think its great and I love that they have their traditional/family names on their birth certificates and paperwork, and its not as if they are called by all their names, just their first one, so its fine:) These are our boys names:

Taj Alexander  Hugh........Alexander (after my hubby's dad) Hugh (after my grandad)

Kai Edward Peterson...........Edward (after my hubby) Peterson (after my hubby's bro)

If we ever had another baby we would do the same thing again-

middle name/s for

Baby Boy will/would be Lee Bryen..........Lee (after my side of the family) Bryen (my maiden name - which also happens to be a boys name) or

Baby Girl will/would be Lee Evelyn........Lee (after my side of the family) Evelyn (after my grandmother)

My sister has THREE middle names and hates it!  Who knows why her mom decided that!  I have thought about not even giving my DD a middle name in case she wants to use her maiden name also when she gets married, as I have.  I would not like to have 2 middle names.  My aunt suggested it to me today when we were talking about my name list and I said NO WAY!  GL deciding!  I can't even come up with a first name!!!

I think one middle name is enough personally, only one middle name will be printed on the social security card which will be the first one.

Our youngest daughter has three names whilst our other three children only have two. The reason we chose two middle names for her were because we lost a daughter and I really wanted to use her name as a middle name but I also wanted her to have one all of her 'own'. Your names are beautiful and sound lovely together so go with it. Do you have a first name yet or is it a secret??

Thanks everyone .  . . I'm leaning toward just the one.  I kind of like the sound of two better, just because our last name has only one syllable (sounds a little strange to have a one syllable middle name followed by a one syllable last name).  Both of my boys have multi-syllable middle names, which sound much better with the last name (of course, we never use their middle names for anything so I don't know why I'd want to give this one 2!).  We're probably going to go with Gwenna, which doesn't really flow with Elizabeth alone.  Our second choice for a first name right now is Claire, likely Claire Elizabeth, solving the issue with the syllables.

Actually our social security cards all have both middle names on them, not just the first one.

This thread reminds me of a funny conversation I had with a friend when she was pregnant with her third child. She already had two boys and didn't know the gender of the baby yet. All of her children have two middle names. I asked her if she had a name picked out for the baby and she replied, "If it's a girl she will be Hannah Charlotte Emily, and if it's a boy probably something like Ben." Hannah Charlotte Emily it was! Now that I'm pregnant with my third child, I totally understand. I'm all set on a girl's name, but I have no clue what I'd name another boy!

Have you thought about using the name Guinevere (gwena-vere) as a formal name and just using Gwenna as a nickname?

lovemy3:  Thanks for the suggestion, but I try not to give my kids first names that I want to shorten (I realize they might at some point but I like to name them what I plan on calling them).  That's actually why my second choice Clara/Claira is now Claire. . . of course that interferes with my intention to give all of the kids two syllable names.  At this rate, this kid is not going to have a name for weeks after she's born!
