I was so hoping I would be able to get a 12 week ultrasound like most of the ladies on ingender. But when I called about blood results, and to make my first appointment, they said they won't accept me for my first appointment until I am 10 weeks along. Even then, it is just "orientation" and "information" with a nurse.

I asked about when I would get my first ultrasound and she said that in a typical pregnancy, they don't give an ultrasound until 18-20 weeks. This made me kinda sad that while most pregnant women get a 12 week I will not. I think I am bummed I won't get to see the nub, and I won't get the chance to guess the sex like most of you. :(

So how typical is this? Do most Dr's see their patients before 12-14 weeks? Do most Dr's order ultrasounds before 18 weeks?

My doc don't usually do 12 week U/S just first U/S (on the first visit) than the 18-22 weeks ultrasound and if you are lucky at 32 weeks. I did have 12 weeks u/s this time and with my second DS just because they couldn't find HB with doppler.

Most of the ladies on here get their 12 wk nub shots from the NT (nuchal translucency sp?) scan to screen for down syndrome and other trisomys.  I am suprised your doctor won't do a scan until 18-20 wks.  I thought usually they did one in the beginning around 8-10 wks to make sure things are looking good and get a heartbeat.  Not sure where you are from though.  You may call your doctor and ask about the NT scan, it is usually done between 11 and 13 wks.  Congrats on the pregnancy!  GL!Good Luck Clover

I really don't know.. I had an U/Sat 8wks (to figure out my due date and to make sure there was a heart beat), 12wks (to make sure everything was coming along) and then at 20wks (the anatomy scan). But I've only been pregnant once before and I had a m/c before I ever got to see the baby on the screen, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

After 1 loss and a year and a half wait, we've
finally been blessed with an amazing little girl.

Standard practice for my MWs and OBs is to see new prenatal patients at 8-10 weeks. *IF* you request a NTT, they will refer you out for it, but you have to go to a MFM several hours away. Otherwise, it's just 1 u/s around 20 weeks.

I've had some complications and have had more u/s than that this time around, but it's not standard for normal, healthy pregnancies in my area.

I didn't get to see my OB for the first time until 12 weeks!  They told me between 10-14 weeks was standard to have your first appointment.

I did get a "Quick" little peek at baby at that first 12 week appointment, but just on a very small portable u/s machine. She just checked size and moved on. It sounds like the the only ultrasound I'll be getting is at 20 weeks.  So you're not alone.....Sad

My doctors normally only do the 20 week u/s.  I had a 10 week one with ds2 because I was not sure of dates (got an extremely late BFP - day 43 of cycle!) and we wanted to figure out my edd.

Some doctors only do them around 20 weeks.  They should however ask if you are interested in the triple screen tests.  They refer you to fetal medicine for that and that is where we get our 12 week nuchal scan photos.  :)

With my first DS I didnt get one til 18-20 weeks.  With the others I had early ones to check dates and because I had previous csections. With this one I had two before the anatomy scan.  Now days, I think Drs are doing the 12week ones due to having NT testing done, so it seem to be common around here.
