It wasn't bad at all.  The iv hurt but other than that no problems or side effects.  It took about an hour and a half and then I was back to work.  Hopefully this will do the trick and get my iron back to where it needs to be for me and baby girl to be healthy.

BTW, I got my bedding set yesterday and it is so cute!!

Wait, I am iron and B12 anemic, what is this? An iron infusion? How is that done and what is it? How low is your iron? I take iron daily and if there is something I could do to just get it over with and be done with it for a while I am all up for it. Is it a one time thing? Or do you have to do this all the time? I'm confused can you give some background info please? I'm interested if you can't tell, lol. If not that's cool I just hate dealing with this anemia crap all the time and feeling like crap and I know it's just going to get worse the further along I get. TIA

Hey,

USA98, They wanted to do it slowly since it was my first as it helps cut down on allergic reactions.  She said normally it would take 30-45 minutes so we'll see.  It was a big bag, sort of like IV fluids, so had to wait for it all to get through the drip.  Black!! yuck!!

FourCutiesOneLove, I had gastric bypass 5 years ago and first became anemic about a year after my first son was born.  They told me that I used up all my iron stores during my first pregnancy not leaving me with enough for myself or this pregnancy.  I had built up my iron before I got pregnant with pills but apparently not high enough to sustain this pregnancy.  I tried to take oral iron but wasn't absorbing it after it got low this time.  My numbers kept dropping and were low.  My OB referred me to a hematologist and he began the IV iron infusions.  I am supposed to go for 6-8 weeks. I have a follow up after 4 weeks so I guess we'll do labs then and see where we are at.  You might could ask your OB if you could be referred to a hematologist??

Really? I had gastric bypass too in 2003 and have the same problem because of it. I have only known of one other person on here, Carotttopsmama, that's had that. I am so happy I have found another one because you can't truly explain everything the surgery does to your body afterwords. Oh my gosh, you've made my day! How has it been for you? I only had minimal problems thankfully since I was so young but I lost all the weight I wanted to and more and even lost the last 20 recently after stress and having dd. Have you been able to keep it off with pregnancy? Dd sucked the life out of me since you don't have much left but I was just happy it was enough that she was healthy I didn't care much about me but I really don't want to go through that again if I don't have to. I guess mine has never been that low or they would've said something but I am glad to know I have options. So do they have to continue to do this after your levels rise back up or is it a more permanent thing? And by permanent I mean like yearly? Or bi-yearly? I hate dealing with this daily and it does nothing to help it. Well, I am sure it helps but it's still not enough IYKWIM. Sorry about all the questions but you made my day! TIA

I had my GBS pretty young too.  I was 26 yrs old.  I lost 140 lbs.  I gained back about 15 lbs from 2004-2006.  I gained 40 lbs with my pregnancy in 2006-2007.  I lost all but 10.  I maintained that weight for the past 2 years until I got pregnant again.  This pregnancy I have gained exactly 10 lbs and I am 20 weeks so I feel like Im doing pretty good.  As for the iron infusions.  He told me he would continue to monitor me and would likely do another round of infusions after the baby is born to bring me back up to normal.  He said he would then monitor me like every 3 months from here on out and if it ever gets low again he can just do more infusions.  Sounds like a good deal to me!! Im hoping to get back on track after this baby is born and lose some weight.  Im meeting with a surgeon soon to discuss my gall bladder.  before I got pregnant I was having a lot of bloating and gas.  Since I have been pregnant I have been having gall bladder attacks. There are no stones but could be a diseased gall bladder.  So I plan to go ahead and meet with the surgeon and then have the gall bladder taken out while Im on maternity leave.  Im hoping that will help me to be able to lose weight as Im thinking it was causing me to stay bloated all the time.

Well that's good you have been able to do well too. I know alot of people jst gain it all back and then more, I don't understand how but ti happens. I actually had my gall bladder taken out when I had my bypass because of pain. I had open gastric bypass so I just told them to take it out while they were in there. I am going to have to look into that, thanks for the info it does sound alot better than taking daily iron and it not even helping.
