Pruning...did I make a mistake? Update

Okay, I am NOT a gardener at all. But I was out this morning cutting back some bushes, etc. because it has already frozen here once, so everything is dead (dormant) or on it's way there. I cut back a small rose bush (and I think I did okay with that one because I've read that's a good thing to do), but is it also okay to cut back bushes with flowers (peonies) and little volunteer trees? I really went to town this morning cutting everything, I hope I didn't mess up too much. I have to say, it looks so much better, though.

I know this isn't breaking news or anything, but wanted to share the outcome:

All of these are starting to bloom and look beautiful!

I was most worried about these little trees, but they have grown new branches as well. *sigh of relief*
