My DS2 has autism and I asked this very same question to GIFV in hopes I could get insurance coverage under "genetic" reasons but they said they don't believe that will work. :( Anyone have this work in the states for insurance coverage? I also have had many miscarriages and I asked GIFV if I could get IF coverage because of my m/c's (even though I don't have trouble actually getting PG) and they said that scenerio is more likely.

Re: PGD and Autism

Congratulations Constructionzone!!

I know this post is a little old, but just wondering if you could share some more info re PGD in Australia to reduce Autism odds. I have Two boys, my eldset has autism my youngest is only 13months so too soon to tell if he will be on the spectrum too. We always wanted three kids, and a girl was always something we thought we would have too. Now with the Autism worry too I am wondering about PGD. I had to have ovulation induction with injectable hormones to fall pregnant with my second so I have had a slight introduction to fertility treatment. We are in Western Australia so I am not sure if it is possible here and what the guidelines are - if you could let me know what you did or point me in the right direction I would be really grateful, thanks!

Re: PGD and Autism

I am in Australia and I am a Fertility Specialist - RE - I work very closely with Geneticists and there has been cases where PGD for Gender Selection was approved for a variety reasons including Autism.

Statistically speaking males have greater chance of Autism Spectrum variants but PGD cannot test for this as yet. There are special circumstances where PGD for gender selection for females has been approved and healthy females have been delivered.

Hoi,

Re: PGD and Autism

Wow, can't believe I asked this question two years ago and it has popped back up. I have a son with ASD diagnosed last year and another with dyspraxia, both disorders predomanant in the male sex. I now know everything there is to know practically about both disorders and yes females do suffer the same genetic disorders, but I can tell you now I have been taking my boys to therapy for two and a half years and only seen one girl so far in the waiting rooms. Its always boys we meet there. Its one of the reasons I would prefer the female sex for once. Dont get me wrong, I would kill and die a horrible death for my quirky little chaps, it is a fact that this disorder is male predomanant. Even if they cannot search for the gene that causes it, they should let the basic facts do the talking.
