Anyone currently doing an IVF/PGD cycle or Starting one in May?

Hey Ladies,

          I just started my first IVF/PGD cycle and I was wondering if there is anyone in here who is also going through this!  Today was my second injection and so far it's not so bad.  I live in Australia and I will be traveling to the US to do PGD for a little girl.  If there is anyone who would like to chat about this cycle  . . . then I will be here!

Goodluck, I hope it works for you, it is definitely an emotional rollercoaster but so worth it when it works.  I look at my son everyday and thank god that it worked for us!!

I'm not going to be doing it for a while but would love to know your experience. I want to go HT for a boy in the future. GL with everything!!

mumof3girls - How many cycles did you do before getting your son?  We have only budgeted for 1 round but we are considering freezing any extra female embies that we don't transfer.  So I am crossing my fingers that it happens the first time around!

sportsfan1 - I would be happy to share my experience with you.  So far it's been great but then again I am only on my thrid day of shots.  The hardest part is going through all the tests and doctors appointments prior to even being able to start.  This process starts way before your first cycle even begins.  For example, my fertility specialist that is doing my IVF/PGD wanted me to do 1-2 months of birth control pills first to regulate my cycles.  Also, it allowed us to manipulate my cycle so that I could start this IVF cycle at the most convenient time for me and my husband.

Hello Australian Girl I'm currently on day 4 cycle I've moved to USA to do this. This is my 3rd ER (egg retieval) I have 2 boys naturally. But seem to b having probs with getting good eggs out I can produce lots of eggs but they seem to be admormal. I'm currently on Clomid and will start follistim in two days. I've done the egg retrieval and gone throu transfers. If u get t transfer, use numbing cream 45 mins before injections if u r doing PIO injects and u can use 25g x1" needles rather than the bigger ones so ask your doc.. Just be prepared that your egg retrieval might be while u r awake I've done both and awake with no meds isn't that bad I tend to sing loud which makes my doc laugh.. Have you had probs with doing it in your home country and traveling i did that once and it was so hard r u being monitoried well in Aussie.. Depending what meds u r on your looking at day 16-17 retrieval.. Make sure you don't get too stimulated that's what happen to me as the UK doc wasn't really hands on and I went to New York.. I live in California now and the doc here is really good try's t do it as natural as possible. Good luck to u I hope u get that little diamond that I'm also looking for xx

SoReady - That's the first time I heard someone having to go on birth control. Did you have irregular cycles to begin with? What if you have regular cycles, do you still have to take them? So glad to hear that the shots aren't that bad. I hope it continues to be great!

I have been on BCP for all of my cycles, and I have very regular cycles. It gives the doctor more control as far as scheduling retrieval etcc..

Oh I didn't know that. Guess I learned something new. This is why I like this post. I want to know the details before I decide doing HT. I know nothing about it.

Shoegal where are you from?  I am from the US but I live in Australia.  Being that they dont do PGD here for gender selection, I am traveling to Hawaii to do PGD.  I am luck enough to have a great Dr here in Oz that supports my  wishes to do gender selection.  I was worried at first that this process was going to be difficult due to the overseas traveling but so far its not that bad. My HI Dr basicly sent over all their instructions on what they want me to do and meds they want me to take.  My Oz Dr was on board and we have just been following the schedule.

I have a history of irregular cycles so I took one cycle of birth control pills to regulate me and to supress (something, sorry I dont remember what it was. It had something to do with dominate follicles.)  Today will be my 4th Gonal-F injection and I will be adding Menopur to the mix in the next couple of days.  My estimated ER date is the 16th and I know that I will not be awake for it. 

I will not be doing PIO, as it is not available in Australia.  Being that the meds are soooo much cheaper here in Australia, I have already bought all the meds for this whole cycle and I am just taking them with me to HI.  I will be doing vaginal incerts instead of PIO.  To me they both sound bad but . . . you do what you've got to do!

So far I haven't had any problems getting monitored.  I have already had 2 u/s this cycle to check the thickness of my lining and to get follicle counts.  Right now I have 28 follies measuring <10 mm.  So I am off to a good start!  I leave for HI tomorrow and I will probably have another u/s shortl after I get there. 

Shoegal when is your ER?  How many eggs did you get out of your other 2 cycles?  What is the worst part for you?  For me, it's worring about the quality of the eggs and that they will all come back as boys.   I wish you the best of luck!!!!  Keep me posted on your progress!

 I am just beginning an IVF/PGD cycle too. I am currently on birth control pills and start my first injections on May 25th. We have fertility issues and have to do IVF in order to achieve a pregnancy. We already have a little boy (almost 2 yrs old) who was conceived through IVF. We just went through a failed frozen IVF cycle in March. I am Canadian and we are not allowed to gender select here, so I am opting to go to Seattle to PGD for a girl this time.I was also on birth control for the cycle prior to my treament  cycle last time - I think it is a pretty common practice.

 I would love to chat with those of you going through this right now too!

hi Soready I'm from the UK. When I did my first ever cycle it was a clinic in Birmingham UK and a New York clinic in USA. unfortunately the doc in UK didn't really want to be involved up to the point he didn't even infom me that I was PCOS. I had t scramble around to find the right needles as he gave me some needle and they weren't even the right ones. They over-simulated me it was really painful and the cycle failed. I've moved to the West Coast of USA and found a really nice Doc who takes it as easy as possible we're just hoping the next retrieval we get good eggs. I'm on clomid and follistrim I'm thinking that my retrieval will be around the 17th May so we will c.. I've done all three ways of the PIO the vaginal way is just like inserting a tampax... I must admit the cycle I did in New York worked out very expensive however the Doc I'm with now his cycle costs and meds r pretty reasonable but it will all depends how quick things take. I hope your retrieval goes well and keep me posted on your progress. Good Luck

Canadian Teacher Welcome to the board!  I'm glad to meet another lady starting this cycle.  Shoegal and myself are also doing IVF/PGD this cycle as well.  I am currently on injections but I haven't been on them for long.  I am just a little further in my cycle the you are. This is the first IVF cycle that I have ever done so if there are any tips that you can give me that would be great!  How many rouds of IVF did you do to conceive your son?

Shoegal - Well, I made it back to the states.  I am ready to get this process going.  We are pretty much on the same cycle.  My Dr's are estimating ER to be somewhere between 15-17th.  How are you feeling?  I don't know if it is all the traveling or the med's but I am so tired!  I have flown all over the world and I have never had jetlag! So I want to say it is the meds.  Also, my ovaries are so sore today!  I had an u/s today and my poor ovaries are so crowded.  Each ovary had 6 follies that measured over 10mm and several more that were just a little smaller.  Also, the was a 17mm follie in each ovary as well. I know know how they are all going to fit in there when the all reach 20+ mm.  Has your ovaries ever felt like they were going to explode?  How is your cycle going?  Have you had in u/s lately?

 SoReady - We were lucky to get pregnant with our son on our first try of IVF. The frozen cycle we just went through was disappointing, but at least I hadn't had to go through all the injections and egg retriveal! As for advice, I would say just take care of yourself. Allow yourself permission to do what you need to do to get through this cycle - nap every afternoon if you have to (I did the first time around) and skip obligations that don't really matter at this time. And don't worry about the numbers - all it takes is one healthy embryo! I have a coworker who did IVF in Feb. and it wasn't looking like she'd get many eggs at all - and now she's pregnant with twins!  

Just found out that close friends of ours had a girl this morning (their first baby). I am happy for them, but also can't help feeling somewhat depressed. I hate how invested I am in the gender of other people's babies!!

Hi SoReady Glad t here the traveling went ok. I'm due for bloods and scan tomorrow Saturday which will b day 10 ovaries ok I usually feel them when I'm taking my last couple of follis trim injections. I've just got major spots think that's with the meds.. I'll post tomorrow with what doc say. I'm lucky my doc is only 10 min drive so that keeps the stress levels down. I'm feeling a bit low this cycle as all of the 17 eggs that we got out last time where abnormal. Your ovaries do get sore I do take peppermint capsule after the retrieval just t easy the bloating. Drink plenty of water t flush out the meds after.. Do u know if your awake for the retrieval, my doc does them while your awake with no sedatives but it's not bad, the nurse finds me funny as I start singing when it feel any discomfort... But u can c and know what's happening around you. I'll post tomorrow good luck and relax and take it easy.. Xxx

Hi SoReady I went t the docs today and I have about 3 on my right side at 10mm and about 4 more that side around 7mm. on my left I have about 4 that r around 12mm and the rest on that side about 4 r around 8mm. Still feeling a bit worried as today he has added another med which I've never taken in that last two cycles it was always just clomid and follistim, but today he's added menopur which is getting me worried that he's not happy with the size, what meds have they got u on. I go back on Tuesday t c for bloods and scan. How's it going with u Xx
