ds is potty trained without underwear... HELP please!

So ds is 100% potty trained as long as he doesn't wear underwear. He can wear pants and be trained but no underwear. I bought little boxers (so cute btw) and with no pants and only boxers he is trained. But if I put on pants over the boxers he go right back to accidents all the time. He thinks underwear are pullups/diapers. How do I train him to wear underwear? My mil says wait a few more months then try again. My mom is mortified he doesn't wear underwear. I myself don't care if ne never wears it because at least he is trained and we are done with diapers/pullups. I'm leaning toward waiting till the end of summer when he is closer to 4 before trying underwear again. And when that time comes how do I go about training with underwear? Thoughts?

I'm inclined to agree with your MIL...you certainly don't want him to backslide and if his penis isn't getting irritated by seams/fabric of his pants, then wearing undies isn't that big of a deal. I'm surprised the boxers didn't work because they are so much like regular summer shorts.... Would it help to let him pick out underwear (when it is time to try again) to see if he would value them enough to not want to potty in them???

I ran into this with ds4 and honestly he never really took to wearing boxers/underwear and he is 6. It doesn't bother me that he doesn't wear them...once in a great while he'll have a pair on but 97% of the time he doesn't wear them...I don't see it as a big deal but like MIL said, maybe try again in a while.

I realize its been nearly two months since your post - hope thing are going better:) I had the same problem with my 23 month old. He is perfect when bottomless or loose pants/shorts/boxers. I went and bought some cheap elastic waist shorts at Walmart - they are only $2.44 here (Knoxville, TN). He does fine with these (over boxers or bare bottom). He only goes to daycare two days a week, and hasn't had any accidents there when wearing the loose shorts. Maybe that will help your boy too, if it hasn't already worked out:)
