MicroSort Expenses, by Mama Maureen

Below is a breakdown of expenses we incurred doing Microsort. Obviously your travel expenses may vary tremendously depending on where you are travelling from, but this may give you a rough idea of the costs involved.
        -- Mama Maureen

$526.00 Initial Expenses
$1,508.00 Travel Expenses
$3,100.00 Microsort Fee
$5,134.00 TOTAL

Initial Expenses
$100.00 Microsort Consultation
(To be deducted from charge for sort.)
$40.00 Clomid, 100 mg for 5 days
This price is for generic, brand name was twice as much at my pharmacy.
$50.00 Semen Analysis
Call different labs for pricing! At Quest, the SA was $107 with results in 3-5 days; at the hospital lab, it was $50 with same-day results. (My OB recommended these two labs.) Also, be sure to ask the lab for instructions -- my lab only accepts samples for SA before 1:00 pm, and I almost didn't learn that detail in time!
$277.00 Testing for Hepatitis B, C, and HIV (for both of us)
Again, I found it pays to shop around for lab work -- these tests were nearly twice as much at another lab I called. Breakdown:
$43.00 - Hepatitis B
$55.50 - Hepatitis C
$40.00 - HIV
(I was told you can get HIV tests for free at the health clinic, if you are willing to wait in line.)
$9.00 Cycle Day 7 Blood Draw
The lab simply charges this fee to draw blood.
$50.00 FexEx Overnight Blood Sample to Microsort
I didn't actually ship my blood sample, because I didn't understand I was supposed to. I left it with the lab instead, and it didn't get to Microsort until several days later.
$526.00 Subtotal

Travel Expenses
$750.00 Airfare
We departed from different cities on different days:
$446.00 - My ticket
$276.00 - DH's ticket
$ 28.00 - Airport parking

I could have gotten the SAME tickets for less than $200 each if I had just purchased them ONE WEEK in advance; but it's hard to trust that you will O on schedule.

I bought our tickets on Expedia and it worked great. I got to easily compare prices, choose the exact flights and times I wanted, and even choose my seats online. I called a travel agent and she could not give me better prices, and gave me way fewer choices. Also, using an e-ticket was so easy; I didn't have to worry about picking up or mailing tickets. I just presented my driver's license at the counter, and they had my tickets ready.

We found it MUCH cheaper to fly into the Baltimore/Washington airport (BWI), although it is a 1 hour drive from there to Fairfax.

$223.00 Car Rental
This was a weekly rate, since I was there six days. I reserved my car online at Avis. (It was an Intrepid.)
$535.00 Hotel, 5 nights
Marriott Residence Inn
Fairfax - Merrifield
8125 Gatehouse Rd
Falls Church VA 22042
703.573.5200

This is THE closest place to Microsort, and it is brand new and very nice. However, the published room rates are $240 and up per night. We got $84 per night, I guess because it was in the fall and that isn't tourist season.

Warning: Be sure they book you for ALL nights you plan to be there -- they booked me at $84 for the first few nights, but didn't put my reservation in for the last night, then charged me $180 for the last night.

Our room had a kitchenette, complete with fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and coffee maker. Also had an iron and ironing board, and a hair dryer.
